ABU GHRAIB'S DARK LEGACY ; TEN YEARS ON AL QAEDA MAKE A BREAK IN AND RELEASES 500 TOP AQ SOLDIERS

al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the attack on Abu Ghraib prison that allowed the escape of 500 top soldiers for al Qaeda.

Two simultaneous attacks, the one on Abu Ghraib and another at Taji jail, allowed the brazen operation and escape of the prisoners.

The planning had been going on for months. The attack also highlights how the care and surveillance of top Al Qaeda soldiers has all but degraded in Iraq.

More than 50 people were killed, all guards and soldiers, in the bloody operation, as Al Qaeda terrorists fired indiscriminately as they moved along.

Of the 500 that had escaped, almost 150 have been recaptured.

The rest are still being sought in a fierce manhunt.  Many of the detainees had been sentenced to death.

Iraq's government however, has received an embarassing hit from the Al Qaeda affiliate that carried out the operation, since the government had claimed it had all but dismantled the group.

Prison security in Iraq is spotty at best. In this case however, Al Qaeda had vowed publicly to attack the prison system, so that more care should have been taken to avoid the incident.
