NEW RESEARCH POINTS TO DAMAGING EFFECT OF CELL PHONE USE

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have discovered that cell phone use causes changes in the human body that are troubling.

The research focused on the head and neck area.  One of the things that was noticed, was that when the cell phone was placed near the salivary glands, the researchers found that heavy cell phone users had noticeable oxidative stress, a process that damages the DNA of cells, by creating toxic peroxide and free radicals.  It is also considered a major risk factor for cancer.

The research focused on 20 heavy cell phone users.  That is defined as cell phone use of a minimum of 8 hours a month.  Most of the participants actually were on the cell phone for much longer; as much as 40 hours per month.  When compared to the control group, i.e., people who never used a cell or used it to text message only, the heavy users had a significant increase in the salivary oxidative stress measurements.

This study does not portend to link cell phone use to cancer, but it adds to the many voices that have raised concern over heavy radiation from cell phones on the human body tissues.
