SYRIA'S PIECEMEAL DESTRUCTION CONTINUES : HISTORIC SYRIAN SHRINE DESTROYED ON MONDAY

The Syrian army, in its relentless pursuit of rebel forces, has destroyed yet another historic site in Syria.

Athough such concerns take a back seat to the loss of life, the piecemeal destruction of the Syrian heritage is regrettable and sad.

The site they destroyed in early Monday was the prophet's companion mausoleum, the Khaled bin Walid mosque.

The site is a location of Muslim pilgrimage and a historic treasure.

The building historically goes back to Ottoman times, with soaring minarets.  The shrine itself was completely destroyed, according to witnesses.

A man near the site was recorded as saying: "I want to tell Arabs and Muslims, how will you face God after Khalid bin Walid's shrine has been destroyed? Why have you abandoned besieged Homs?"

The same however, could be said about the loss of life.

A nearly daily bombing campaign has besieged the city for more than a year.

Earlier this year, the minaret of the Umayyad mosque was destroyed in April.
