UN CHEMICAL WEAPONS INSPECTORS ARRIVE IN DAMASCUS

United Nations inspectors are flying to Damascus to examine the evidence of chemical weapon employment in the civil war theatre to ascertain whether the Syrian army or opposing forces have committed crimes against humanity.

Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom and Angela Kane, who is the chief representative for world disarmament for the United Nations, traveled to Damascus yesterday.

The Syrian regime is awaiting to brief them on their evidence and discuss what areas of the Syrian territory they will be able to access for further evidence.  However, there is little doubt that the Syrian regime will restrict the commission's movement and actions to those areas and incidents that play in their favor.

As the dispute over who has used chemical weapons grows stronger, each side has accused the other of using lethal weapons, with a previous commission finding the evidence inconclusive and a French independent investigation finding that the Syrian government employed the deadly chemical weapon sarin against rebels and civilians.
